Rhetorical Analysis 

General Info for Introduction: Racism in sports have been looked over many times by scholars and sports fans. People have noticed the racial remarks that opposing fans have said towards team players during games or in a regular conversation about sports. There is even al sports team with the racial slur, “Redskins”. This issue of race discrimination will unfortunately continue due to an increase of people of color in sports.

Rhetorical Situation: The reason this article exists is for people who are sport critics and enjoy sports and realize the racial themes in current games. In current times, there are times where fans for a team will yell racial slurs or violent terms to the opposing team. This article explains as to how sports is supposed to be and not what it is now. This article was written because Mr. Alexei S. Avtonomov, who currently heads the Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination noticed the violence during games and how it needed to be stopped.

Purpose: To inform the audience of the author’s opinions of the need to be more of a fight to against race discrimination in sports. There also might be a possibility of the racial themes in sports to increase due to a lack of change or say in big industries. This has occurred in a Blackhawks games when fans were yelling “Basketball” towards a black athlete in a predominantly white team. The black athlete, Anthony Duclair, commented that it happens many times in not only games but in society, even after NHL created an ad explaining that “Hockey I for everyone.” (Chicago Blackhawks) 

Stance: States News Service’s stance is very informative and could be seen as bias due to the need to post on this newspaper service. “We call on States and sports authorities in different parts of the world to intensify the fight against racism through awareness creation, and by imposing appropriate sanctions on clubs and individuals who propagate racial hatred, abuse and violence” (Racism in sport). This is an important piece of information that the authors included because it correlates with the purpose. The author’s stance is against racist comments and the lack of people trying to reduce the amount of racist hate. 

Genre: States News Service is a student newspaper service that has articles written by students that are up to date and state modern issues that occurring in the world today. There are plenty of articles posted on the newspaper service that are heavily informative and at times opinionated. This makes me believe

Purpose: To enforce a reaction of the readers by writing about what the author has experienced due to an article of clothing, make the audience aware of what people think about racial slurs and how important it isn’t to them. “Go Skins!,” to which I replied, “Nah.” Upon his realization, he called me an “a–hole.” This represents the reactions the author received when wearing the shirt.

Genre: USA Today was an opinion section on their website which is where this article was posted. There’re various articles on this news website that are both informative and opinionated. The article also includes images of Joseph’s twitter posts which further explains his opinion on the topic. Because the article is opinionated, the purpose of the article might  be bias and try to make you believe what the author believes in. It also might include bad information that makes their argument better but not information that might be against their argument.

Summary: In “The Problem in General” Paul Anderson explains what racism is and how it correlates with sports, specifically in African-American athletes. He continues to explain the type of racism in sports, “unconscious racism”. People who are racists are unaware of the lack of need for racists themes in sports, or anywhere.

Rhetorical Situation: This article exists to point out what non colored athletes think of colored people or athletes in general. It further explains the mindset people of the athlete world think. 

Audience: This article is posted on a magazine that consists off posts about science, politics, sports and other topics. Because of this, there would be a large group of people will be reading this article, due to the various topics included in this magazine. Also, due to the title, any Jack Nicklaus’ fans or critics. 

Purpose: To inform and voice the author’s  opinion about the athlete Jack Nicklaus and other sport related people’s comments on people of color. 

Genre: The Humanist is a magazine that has various articles, specifically modern sports drama that may be interesting to the people who purchase or read the magazine. The magazine’s articles all connect to modern topics that need to be known to the public. 

All the articles analyzed below show a connection between racist themes in sports and how they could affect people. The articles are all informative and could teach the readers what athletes or sports fans seem to focus on or go against.
